If you ask me what defines modern jewelry, I’ll tell you this: It’s not just what we wear today. It’s how we choose to express who we are.

Modern pieces are often minimal, clean, and versatile. Designed for everyday life. Designed to move with you. There’s intention, there’s artistry, and yes, there’s a growing awareness around sustainability.

But the more I explore the work of today’s most talked-about designers, the more I notice something… everything feels refined, but not always remarkable. Technology has elevated production, made things scalable, precise, but sometimes at the cost of soul.

And then I look at pieces that have lived for over a century: Victorian, Georgian, vintage and I feel the difference instantly.

Those pieces carry weight. "History. Symbolism. Meaning." Love, nature, status, every detail had a purpose. And the materials? Solid, authentic, enduring. High-karat gold, natural stones, craftsmanship that was never rushed.

Today, we hear terms like “gold finish” or “nickel-free” presented as luxury. We see gold vermeil, heavy plating, alternatives designed for accessibility. And while they serve a purpose, they tell a different story.

Modern jewelry is also embracing new expressions mix of handmade + technology (CAD design, 3D printing)—lab-grown diamonds, Herkimer crystals, turquoise, even sea glass 👀 Raw. Organic. Imperfect, but beautiful in a different way.

So maybe the question isn’t modern vs antique…

Maybe it’s what makes a piece truly valuable today? Is it the material? The story? Or the feeling it leaves behind?

That’s the space I’m exploring.
