I spent part of my weekend fine-tuning my website. Many people, myself included when I first created it, think that launching a website is the goal, but I can tell it is the beginning of the journey, the tip of the iceberg. What comes after, though, is the real heavy work.
Since my website went live, I’ve received an endless stream of emails offering SEO services and “optimization solutions.” The reality is that small businesses like mine simply don’t have the budget to pay for most of these services. I remember visiting vendors at local markets and asking if they had a website. The answer was almost always no, “I have a Facebook page instead.” At the time, I wondered why, especially now that creating a website seems fairly easy with modern tools. Now I understand.
The technical work behind maintaining and optimizing a website is often more than what a “normal” person can realistically handle. So this week, I decided to train myself. With my website open, following recommendations step by step, and with AI by my side, I slowly worked through each task. Having that guidance helped me understand what I was doing and led me to the right settings when I couldn’t easily find what was being asked.
I learned a lot. I downloaded and set up Bing tools and Google Analytics, reviewed and rewrote my texts to make them more SEO-friendly, indexed several pages, and worked on increasing backend links. I also reviewed all my social media links and connected my website to platforms like Etsy and Pinterest. I was even encouraged to open business accounts on Yelp and Google to increase traffic, something I never imagined would be useful for a business that doesn’t rely on local sales.
I’m planning to spend a couple more weekends working on all of this, but it makes me wonder how difficult this process must be for people who don’t have the time, patience, or tools to figure it out on their own.
Being a small business owner today isn’t just about creating something beautiful, it’s about learning to navigate an entire invisible system behind it.
