Behind the Scenes - Making of My New Sea Glass Owl Pendant

Most people see the finished piece and think it was easy because the bezel was already made… but creating this little sea glass owl is actually one of the most delicate and time-consuming parts of my work.

Each piece of sea glass has a different shape, thickness, and curve, so nothing ever fits perfectly the first time. I start by spreading dozens of little glass pieces, tiny stones and pearls on my table , different blues, whites, aquas, and then I begin the slow process of testing combinations. It’s like solving a tiny ocean puzzle.

I check how the colors speak to each other, how the curves align, and how the natural light shines through each glass fragment. For every piece, there are many I try and set aside because they don’t “feel right.”

But here is the part no one sees:

Between each piece of sea glass, I place tiny metal fillers so the background shines evenly and the glass stays elevated and secure. These little metal bits create contrast, support, and structure… and they are so small that I often use tweezers and a magnifying lens to get them in place.

Once the design is perfect, I secure everything carefully, making sure the balance and flow are exactly right. What you see is the final result , a joyful little owl filled with ocean colors, but behind it lies patience, precision, and a true love for working with these natural treasures from the sea.

I had previously created a little turtle using a similar technique, and it became one of my most popular pieces among my viewers. That experience encouraged me to keep exploring this style and bring new ocean-inspired creations to life. Creating pieces like this is slow, mindful, and incredibly rewarding. Each one becomes a tiny artwork full of movement, color, and ocean magic.
