What is Sea Glass?

Within my circle I have found people asking me about sea glass, and even though the name seems to say it all, it truly deserves a more clear explanation.

Sea glass begins its life as something very ordinary, most often a glass bottle or jar, sometimes a piece of tableware, or even glass from old windows. Many of these pieces come from a time when glass was more commonly used and less carefully disposed of. Decades ago, it was usual for trash to end up in the ocean, either intentionally or by accident.

Some of these fragments may have come from ships that sank long ago, carrying goods across the sea. Others may have originated from coastal landfills, where discarded bottles and glass objects slowly m

ade their way into the water over time. Storms, tides, and shorelines changes, played their part, carrying these broken pieces into the vast movement of the ocean.

Once in the sea, transformation begins. Waves toss the glass back and forth, sometimes for decades. Sand and saltwater work together like nature’s polishing tools, softening the sharp edges and giving each piece its smooth, frosted appearance. What was once jagged and discarded becomes something safe to hold, even beautiful.

When I walk along the shoreline and find a piece of sea glass, I can’t help but wonder where it came from. Once you find one, it feels like discovering a tiny piece of history… one that the ocean decided to return.

Sea glass is, in a way, a small reminder of time, resilience, and change. Something once broken and forgotten is reshaped by the ocean into something treasured, and this is why you don’t need to be a beach girl to love sea glass, the way I do.
