The beauty of a market day

This weekend was full of excitement and hard work as I attended a market in San Antonio on Saturday. The night before, I could barely sleep. I was worried about forgetting something, even though I had made a list and spent almost the entire week organizing everything carefully.

I don’t attend markets very often. Saturday’s event was only my fifth one. While I’m thankful that my Etsy shop has been doing fairly well, there is something I truly miss when selling online: the interaction with customers. I love hearing what catches their attention, discovering which pieces speak to them the most, and listening to their stories and reactions in person.

When we arrived at the market, my mindset was completely different from the anxious one I had the night before. I felt calm and easygoing, with no expectations of high sales. The weather was overcast, and since the previous weekend had been Mother’s Day, we assumed attendance would probably be low.

The market is a small one on the south side of San Antonio, and not many people know about it. Still, depending on the occasion, it can become very crowded, especially during Día de los Muertos, 5 de Mayo, or Fiesta, since it is located very close to the World Heritage Site “San Antonio Missions”.

After four hours, our suspicions proved correct: not many people showed up. Even so, I had some visitors stop by, received wonderful compliments, and made a few sales. More importantly, I realized how much I enjoy connecting with people. I truly love the conversations with customers and neighboring vendors, and the sense of community these events create.

A special thanks goes to my husband, who sacrificed his Saturday to help me. He is always there for me, supporting my dreams in every possible way. I don’t think he fully realizes it yet, but I would do the very same for him whenever he needed me.
