Small Business Struggles When Technology Is Needed

Almost every day, I receive emails from developers offering to “improve” my website.
At the beginning, they upset me enormously. I sent them straight to spam. But there were so many, and they kept coming from different people, that eventually I started reading them.
Many used the same template wording. Copy, paste, send. But a few of them actually took the time to assess my site and offer specific suggestions. Those caught my attention.
Instead of hiring someone immediately, I decided to try something different. I downloaded Google Search Console, reviewed my analytics, and started learning a new language: LCP, INP, CLS…! Suddenly I was back in college, studying concepts and applying them in a “lab,” except now the lab was my own business.
People may ask, why not just hire a developer? It would be easier and faster. But small businesses don’t always have that kind of budget. We already carry yearly expenses: domain fees, website platforms, AI tools, advertising, and sometimes there isn’t much left for unexpected technical fixes.
So I changed hats. Designer. Photographer. Marketer. And now… a little bit of a tech student too.
Today I learned that most of the photos on my website are too heavy and need to be resized and optimized. Which means I have over 300 images to transform into lighter formats. Fun times ahead 😅
But this is part of building something on your own, learning what you didn’t plan to learn, solving problems you didn’t expect, and growing in ways you never imagined.
Mariel!
