Art Deco

About a month ago, I was experimenting with a new, ornate bezel and a piece of clear mist sea glass. As I kept working, adding small details, touches of gold, and finally a pearl and I realized I had created something that felt like it had stepped out of another time.

It reminded me of the Art Deco period.

As soon as I finished it, I said to myself, this is really unique… and it will be difficult for me to let it go. So, I didn’t. I kept it.

Art Deco was a design movement that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, a time of elegance, optimism, and bold creativity. It was influenced by progress, architecture, and a fascination with symmetry and geometry. In jewelry, this translated into strong lines, intricate patterns, and a love for contrast, mixing materials like gold, gemstones, and pearls.

There is something very intentional about Art Deco pieces. They are not quiet. They are meant to be seen, to stand out, to carry a sense of confidence.

As I looked at the piece I had made, I could see those same elements: the ornate structure, the layered details, the combination of materials. It wasn’t planned, but somehow my hands arrived there.

I do have a couple of friends who love this kind of jewelry; pieces that are bold, detailed, and full of character, and I know this is something they would immediately be drawn to. Pieces like this don’t try to blend in; they choose their person.

When I create, I don’t usually think about a specific style or even a specific person. I simply follow the process, one step, one decision at a time. And sometimes, the result reflects a part of me I didn’t even realize was present. This piece did that.

It showed me that even without planning, influences find their way into my work. That creativity carries memories, history, and inspiration quietly, until one day it reveals itself in something tangible.

Maybe that’s part of the beauty of creating, you don’t always know where you’re going, but every now and then, you arrive somewhere unexpected… and it feels just right.
